But this camp offers a special opportunity for children to learn  from a respected cutting edge photojournalist. 

Each session is guaranteed to inspire your child and offer them a better understanding of photography.  Price includes all materials

Wen Saunders resides in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. 
She holds a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Communications Arts & Design.  Saunders is also recognized as one of the leading wedding photojournalist in the
U.S. and credited with the re-emergence of black and white photography during wedding coverages.  Saunders has spoken numerous times at professional photography conventions and was featured as the one of twelve wedding photographers in Wedding 2000,a live video cast program in 1998.  Tamron Industries, the nation's largest lens manufacturer uses her variety of images in their promotions and trade show booths both nationally and internationally.

Saunders ‘s cowboy, western, and rodeo images were featured in American Cowboy Magazine (March/April 2004) and Western Horseman Magazine .  Saunders’s western photographic images were featured in the Greeley Independence Stampede Art Show in 2006 and 2007.   She served as Theater PR Director for Fort Lewis College from 2005-2007, producing marketing and photography for the college's Theater Department.

She opened Artisans of the Southwest Gallery & Winery in Pagosa Springs, Colorado from 2008-2010, where over 50 artists, along with herself displayed and sold their work.  The gallery flooded in 2010 and did it not relocate or re-open.  In 2011, in addition to her photojournalism assignments, she became a Realtor with Exit Advantage Pagosa Realty in Pagosa Springs.

Students taking both morning and afternoon session should bring a bag lunch and stay during the lunch hour, prior to start of afternoon class. B/W 35mm Film Camera Photography

Wen will begin the session with a brief history of photography and cameras.  She'll share with participants a variety of vintage and modern day cameras. Students will also explore how photographs began and the cameras that were used.  Actual vintage tintype photographs will be shown.  Children will learn techniques to take better images with a their camera using black & white film.  Indoor and outdoor photography will be discussed and photographed. 

Fees include all materials, disposable cameras or film. Students using 35mm camera should bring their camera.  Participants should wear sunscreen and hats, as we'll be photographing outside 
(water bottles provided).

Photoshop Automated Contact Sheet
of Digital Images


Students will see each step of making a digital contact sheet of their images using Photoshop.

mages will be critiqued.  Students will interact toward one another's images through the critique process.  Participants will have the opportunity to review and discuss their images, including image composition.

Processing b/w film  

 Students will process an exposed roll of b/w film (previously photographed).  Wen will lead students step by step in processing the film.  Film chemicals and processing materials will be explained and experienced by each student.
(For Lafayette class, Wen will mail printed contact sheets of film negatives to students)

Fees include all materials, disposable cameras or film, and images processing.  
Participants should bring apron or wear old clothing.

Digital Kiosk Photography
 
Students will venture to a digital processing kiosk and learn the basics of making photographs from a kiosk Wen will help students alter color on their digital files, convert to b/w or sepia.  Students will select 3 of their best photographs prints from the kiosk and make a 4x6 color, 5x7 sepia, and 8x10 b/w photograph of the images. Students will then make a photo card (with 4x6), frame & mat 5x7, mat 8x10 photographs.

Fees include all materials. Students should bring their flash memory cards for printing. 
Participants should wear sunscreen and hats, as we'll be photographing outside

Introduction To Color FILM
Photography & Location Shoot

 Film camera participants will learn to properly load film into their cameras and will use their 35mm film cameras (older manual cameras are the best with detachable lens) with color film to experience the basics of photography and exposure. All students will learn more about shutter speeds and f-stops will be and participants will record their settings when photographing. Basic camera operation and settings will be covered. Students will be given an assignment in color theory and photograph with their cameras.
Film will be collected for overnight processing and available at the next morning class.

A limited number of 35mm cameras are available for rent at $25, if needed.

Fees include all materials (film for film camera users).
   Participants should wear sunscreen and hats, as we'll be photographing outside (water bottles provided).

 B/W Film Darkroom Processing

Students will your Wen's B/W darkroom and learn what it takes to set-up a simple darkroom. Students will process an exposed roll of b/w film with Wen's direction. They will make contact sheets of their negatives.  A critique will help students to understand their weakest and strongest images.

35mm B/W Darkroom Making Photos

  Each student will choose at least one photograph and make a 5x7 enlargement.  Dodging and burning print enhancements will be demonstrated and students will apply the techniques to their photographs.  The developing process and chemicals of black and white photographs will be demonstrated and students will apply the techniques to their enlargement prints.

Matting & Framing Your Photographs

  A grand opportunity to learn more about choosing the right mat and frame to display your photograph.  Students will dry mount the enlargement onto a mat board using a hot dry mount press. Wen will discuss the proper framing of photographs. Students will be encouraged to enter photographs into the Archuleta County Fair.

Learn and understand the parts of a camera and how they function. Here's your opportunity for a pro to help you know your camera!Camera maintenance will be discussed. We’ll evaluate f-stop basics.  You'll not only have a keen understanding of f-stop characteristics, but also discover the best f-stop decisions for the image you photograph.  Learn the best "resolution" settings to capture your photographs.

Topics include: aperture depth of field (minimum and maximum), aperture priority, proper film loading, rewinding partially exposed rolls of film for re-use, selecting the proper f-stop, digital verses film camera options, camera manufactures, and purchasing a camera, lenses, and additional equipment (resources).

F-stops and Shutter Speeds   

Learn how to select the right shutter to help create better images.  
Advantages of slow and fast shutter speeds will be discussed. Participants will shoot an assignment with Wen during this session.

Topics include: slow shutter speed effects, fast shutter speed effects, 
shutter speed camera priority, balancing shutter speed and aperture, 
logistics of shutter speed, manually setting your shutter speed, and image composition.

This segment is dedicated to help you understand why f-stops are important for you to control.  Explore the advantages and disadvantages of speeds ISO settings. 

Topics include:
selecting the right film speed for the action scenario, 
 best exposure settings (aperture and shutter) to suit the intent of your photo.

Natural Light (+/- exposure)   

This segment is dedicated to help you understand why f-stops are important for you to control.  Explore the advantages and disadvantages of ISO speeds.  Create the best exposure without an electronic flash.

Topics include:
 adjusting the right  speed for the lighting scenario, 
using over and under exposure through f-stops, choosing the right resolution setting, 
right exposure settings (aperture and shutter), and image perspective.

Electronic Flash Systems       

Does the electronic flash have you puzzled?  
Are you interested in obtaining better images using your flash? 
This session will give you confidence to easily use your flash.  

For those who don't have a flash- you can rent one for $20 
and discover the right flash to purchase!  


Topics: Shadowless images, reducing red-eye, using a LumiQuest 
bouncer, fast recycle times with battery pack options, adjusting 
exposures for particular lighting conditions.
 

Topics include: aperture and shutter settings, flash settings (TTL, auto, manual), flash manufacturer options, creating "shadowless" flash images, using the flash outdoors and indoors, film speed options, camera hot shoe or camera bracket options, and pc cord adaptors.

   Bring an exposed roll of black and white film and process it yourself. Wen will provide all the necessary items to show how you can process your b/w film without a darkroom!  Through Wen's step by step instructions, you'll process your film and learn the chemicals and supplies of the film processing processing.

Topics include: step-by-step film processing
(chart & steps provided), choosing the right film processing materials
and equipment, vendor resources for materials/equipment purchase.
Participants will process an exposed black and white film roll, with Wen's supervision.
